On 29th January, 1915, the 2nd Royal West Surrey (Queens) battalion of 22 Brigade, 7th Division, moved into the front line near Fleurbaix where they remained until relieved on 2nd February. On 1st February, the day on which William Joy lost his life, the enemy snipers were less active than on the previous two days but the area around the battalion HQ was shelled. |
